Ground breaking ceremony for Contact Climbing Gym in St. George, Utah

New Climbing Gym Breaks Ground

Contact Climbing Gym held a groundbreaking ceremony to signify the start of construction on the future 18,000 square foot facility located at 2865 East 850 North Street near Costco.

City officials and those involved with the project gathered for a short program to hear more about Contact Climbing, which will be the first indoor climbing gym in St. George. The climbing gym has been anxiously awaited by the more than 400 members that have already signed up.

“After two years in the development process, we are beyond excited to finally begin construction on the building,” said Co-Founder Chris Horton. “The support we have received from the community, the city, and our partners has been overwhelmingly positive and has honestly been one of the biggest factors in keeping the process going to this point. We can’t wait to share a world-class facility with our supporters and everyone else in the local community.”

The building will include 12,000 square feet of roped climbing walls that reach up to 50 feet high that appeal to climbers of all expertise. Additionally, the building will house 3,000 square feet of bouldering on 14-foot walls, a yoga and group fitness studio, cardio equipment, weight machines, free weights, and retail space to purchase equipment, snacks, and drinks.

Contact Climbing plans to offer many different opportunities to the community such as summer camps, after-school programs, competitive team climbing, and indoor and outdoor clinics.

Construction will begin immediately by local contractor Watts Construction.

“Watts Construction is very excited about this project,” said Watts Project Manager, TJ Ford. “This is a unique building with its height and size. We can’t wait to get it out of the ground, and are very excited to see it open. This fitness center is taking things to a whole new level in this community.”

Contact Climbing is estimated for completion by summer 2020.
